Community forum about contracted fire and rescue services

A community forum is planned to take place on Thursday, March 28 at Havana’s City Hall located at 711 North Main Street. The meeting is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

Havana’s Town Manager, Kendrah Wilkerson, has been working hard to relay the importance of the forum’s topic and main subject of discussion to property owners, residents, churches, schools, agricultural operations, businesses, and not-for-profit organizations.

According to the Havana Volunteer Fire Department’s Summary of Issue report, last year the department responded to 289 calls in need of service, but an estimate of 86% (248) of those calls were outside of Havana. The contracted services and area coverage are being seriously observed, dissected, and questioned because it takes a lot of funding to provide equipment, fire services, and pay emergency responders etc.Havana’s Fire Chief, Kris Hood has been trying to find more positive solutions like applying for grants to help fund his department.

Dilemmas and setbacks are nothing new for Gadsden County when it comes to the topic of fire safety, services, funding, and the budget. There is a constant turn table of suggestions, what ifs, and possible opportunities, but sometimes things are easier said than done.
