On Friday, May 11, the Havana Public Library hosted about 90 three-year-old day care, pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and first-grade students from five schools and/or child care centers in Havana at a Mickey & Friends Storybook Carnival.
The purpose of the event was for the library to kick off its summer reading series and to allow the children to have some fun while listening to books being read and having interactive activities with some of the characters from the books they have read.
The five participating schools/child care centers from Havana at the event included Bridge Academy Educational Center, Eagle’s Nest Early Learning Academy, Havana Magnet School, Heart to Heart Christian Academy and the Tallavana Christian School.
Shannon Powell, outreach librarian for the Gadsden County Public Library, said this same event was initiated last year in Quincy and Chattahoochee and was repeated in those locations this year as well as in Havana.
“We think these events have worked out very well,” said Powell. “We’ve given kids activities to help make reading more fun and to help kids to develop a love for reading.”
