Jackson County Sheriff’s Office to host a civilian firearms safety course

Did you know unintentional injury is a leading cause of death among children and adolescents in America with firearms being the leading injury method? Tragically the incidents occur from children having easy access to guns that are not securely locked up and out of their reach.

Safety courses provide special training that can help teach individuals to make responsible decisions when handling and properly storing firearms. Accidental shootings happen every day in America and many end up with tragic endings. Educated and responsible gun owners are less likely to be involved in accidental shootings.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting a course for civilians on firearms safety at the Chipola College Reddoch Range on the morning of April 6 at 10 a.m. Anyone who is interested in registering or requesting information will need to email firearmscourse@jackso.com. There is specific paperwork that must be filled out and returned before a reserved spot can be secured for participants taking the course.

The importance of learning about gun safety is imperative to gun owners and for those who are planning to own firearms in the future. Individuals who run out to make spontaneous gun purchases without taking a safety course miss out on learning important overviews presented during the course about Florida Laws and Statutes etc. The course also covers general rules for safe gun handling, safety methods including how to properly unload a firearm, how to stand and grip a firearm, trigger control, etc. Participants will also be given the opportunity to test fire a variety of firearms thus giving them hands-on training and educational experience.

For those who wish to sign up for the course but are unable to attend on April 6th another course is available to register for that will be held on April 20t.
