Library offering summer programs

The Gadsden County Public Library System is offering varied programs this summer.

For the library’s youngest members, there are a variety of preschool programs designed to help youngsters read, play and be creative.

Pre-School Story Time
Every Wednesday at 10 a.m., the William McGill Library in Quincy (732 S. Pat Thomas Parkway) is offering Preschool Story Time, hosted by Children’s Librarian Kris Odahowski.

This program utilizes a classic approach to early childhood literacy and tries also to help foster a lasting love of reading through a fun and interactive learning environment.

For older children, the library is offering myriad programs throughout the summer to encourage creativity and encourage lasting learning through developing a love of reading.

Summer Reading Program
One of the library’s most popular summer programs for older youth is the Summer Reading Program, which officially started on May 21.

This program provides local youth with the opportunity to flex their mental muscles and keep their minds active, while getting a chance to win some great prizes in the process.

“Pie and Prose” Program
The library also has an innovative “Pie and Prose” program happening through its Literacy Department.

“Pie and Prose” is an innovative program conceived by Literacy Director Mari VanLandingham that is free and open to the public. This program has many benefits to latent readers by modeling good interpretive reading skills and helping to develop important critical listening skills.

It also provides library patrons with the ability to interact with local writers, build new vocabulary, and learn about local subjects all the while enjoying good company and delicious pie.
