August arrived with a hot gust of brutal summer heat, but the searing temperatures and saturating humidity has not kept Havana homeowners out of their gardens.
While it is easy to throw in the hat and pass on the yard work during August, the Havana
Garden Club found that local homeowners are still keeping up with their lawn beautifications even during the summer months.
Every month, the Havana Garden Club recognizes two yards (one residential, one commercial) for the honor of being the Havana Yard of the Month; this month, the club was not able to find a local business for the recognition, but were able to applaud the efforts of a local homeowner.
This month, the residential award was presented in unison to Traci Norris and Jan Scott.
Norris and Scott reside in a duplex near downtown Havana, and their joint efforts in their shared lawn caught the attention of garden club members.

“The two tenants seem to be trying to outdo each other in beautifying their respective yards,” said garden club member Dianne Croley. “With pots of colorful flowers, yard art and inviting lawn furniture, you just want to come sit and sit a spell.”
This is not the first time Norris and Scott have won, considering they were recognized in 2020 for their joint efforts – but Croley says they definitely deserved a repeat award.
“Considering they are right on one of the main streets in Havana, we really appreciate their work to keep our town beautiful,” added Croley.
The Havana Garden Club is currently accepting nominations for future Yards of the Month.
Nominations can be either for the commercial or residential award.
