News Brief: Gadsden High student attends FSU Medical Institute

Brittany Mackey of Gadsden County High School is one of 56 rising high school juniors and seniors from traditionally underserved communities from around the state (as well as four from out of state) who attended the Florida State University College of Medicine’s Summer Institute this year. The mission of the institute is to encourage students from diverse backgrounds to consider careers in medicine. The students stayed in dorms on campus and took part in activities, discussions, classes and training both at the College of Medicine and at local hospitals, medical practices and assisted-living facilities. Each day featured a different focus such as geriatrics, primary care and rural medicine. Seventy-eight percent of past participants in the program since it began in 2008 have gone on to attend college with a major in science, technology, engineering, math or medicine.
