Quincy Police take local youth to participate in the HBCU Promise Initiative

Members of Quincy Police Department’s Juvenile Intervention Services Division recently took several local youth to Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University to take part in the Historically Black College and University Promise Initiative.

The HBCU Promise is, “TO CHANGE THE WORLD!”

According to a press release from the department, the youth were able to interact with other youth from Florida and Georgia through team building exercises, character education and learning skills to be courageous in life. While at the university, the youth also got the opportunity to tour the Black National Archives and Research Center and the Hansel Tooke Recreational Center.

The day concluded with lunch at the university’s cafe.

“It’s so important for us to invest in our youth by engaging them in mentorship programs, education and activities, this activity afforded us the opportunity to do just that,” Capt. Zachary Woods, the department’s public information officer said.

The Quincy Police Department Juvenile Intervention Services Division is comprised of the Youth Cadet

Program, the Police Athletic League and the Foundation of Sports, Education and Mentorship.

“Our goal is to reach as many of our city’s youth as possible, while instilling into them the skills necessary for a successful transition into adulthood,” said Chief Timothy Ashley.

Parents looking to get their youth involved should contact Capt. Woods or Ofc. Vaughn at the Quincy Police Department by calling (850) 627-7111.
