Midway council meeting cancelled
The Midway City Council canceled its monthly meeting last Thursday, as too few council members were available to legally conduct official town business.
Mayor Wanda Range and Mayor Pro Tem Samuel Stevens, the only council members available Thursday, decided to move items on the June 7 meeting agenda to the council’s next regular meeting agenda, July 5.
Councilman Ronald Colston had previously been excused from the meeting and Councilwoman Carolyn Francis called in sick the afternoon of the meeting. With the late Charlie Smith’s seat still vacant (Smith died in February while in office), that left only Range and Stevens.
The Midway City Charter requires at least three council members to be present to hold official votes and generally conduct official business.
The council seat left vacant by Smith’s passing was one of the items up for discussion at the cancelled meeting.
Today last day for free Irma disaster legal assistance
Floridians affected by Hurricane Irma who need legal assistance but can’t afford an attorney must call the state’s toll-free hotline today to receive a referral for legal advice.
Florida Irma victims can call the hotline, (866)550-2929 any time day or night before tomorrow, June 15.
Callers will be asked to leave a message that includes their name, phone number, email address, county where they live and a brief description of their legal issue.
A Florida-licensed attorney will contact callers within two business days to discuss their needs.
English and Spanish-speaking lawyers are available at no charge to offer disaster-related advice to low-income individuals and families.
Free, reliable legal resources are also available at FloridaLawHelp.org.
Murder sentencing postponed
A Tallahassee man found guilty of second-degree murder will be sentenced in a Gadsden County courtroom June 26.
Keveonte Thomas, 19, was convicted last month for his role in the murder of Kentrell Thomas.
Prosecutors say Keveonte and two other suspects – 20-year-old Mark Williams and an unnamed 15-year-old minor – were involved in a shooting at Gadsden Arms Apartments in Quincy that led to Kentrell Thomas being shot and killed. All three suspects were charged with second-degree murder.
A sentencing hearing had been set for earlier this month but has now been moved to
June 26.
Florida Department of Economic Opportunity launches disaster prep website
The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity has launched FloridaDisaster.biz to help Florida businesses prepare for and recover from hurricanes and other disasters.
Features of the new website include a disaster planning toolkit; critical disaster updates from the State Emergency Operations Center; and a Business Damage Assessment Survey to help businesses get back up and running after an emergency.
Florida Governor Rick Scott said he encourages Florida business to visit FloridaDisaster.biz, make a disaster plan and stay updated as hurricane season continues.
Free meals for students during summer break
Gadsden County kids age 18 and under, can eat nutritious meals free-of-cost during summer break, thanks to an initiative by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The program, called “Summer BreakSpot,” provides breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks at multiple locations in Gadsden County and throughout Florida. All sites are adult-supervised.
