Susie Morris Column: Week of February 8, 2018

Tourney Time for Girls’ Hoops

The county’s three girls’ basketball teams will be participating in their district tournaments this week with the boys’ districts cranking up next week.

Hard to believe that basketball is on the backside and spring sports are just around the corner.

Munroe and Tallavana Christian will play each other Tuesday in the first round of their 2A-District 1 tournament taking place at #1-seed Aucilla Christian.

Tallavana won both games during the regular season and would love to experience going at least two rounds deep like they did in 2017.

The winner will face the Warriors on Thursday.

Gadsden County, meanwhile, will play at Marianna on Tuesday in the District 2-5A tournament.

The teams on the other side of the bracket are Florida High and Taylor County.

The two winning teams in those two district semifinals on Tuesday will play in the district final on Thursday night.

Gadsden County Boys’ Soccer in Regional Playoffs

The Gadsden County High School boys’ soccer team defeated Rickards, 4-0, in the first round of the district playoffs last weeks.

Adrian Tovias had two goals to lead the Jaguars.

The Jaguars then lost 2-0 to Florida High in the district finals.

The Jaguars next play at Pensacola Catholic on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the regional quarterfinals.

Munroe Players Win Awards

For the Robert F. Munroe Day School, junior offensive/defensive lineman Derrick Dudley recently received the 2017 Sportsmanship Player of the Year Award from the North Florida Football Conference.

Juniors Josh Glynn and Julian (J.R.) Harrison also were named to the North Florida Football Conference All-Division Team.

Finally, Junior Jaddon Derico was named to the North Florida Basketball Conference All-Tournament Team. Derico also was named the Conference Player of the Week for January 22-27. He averaged 12.3 points, 6 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.7 steals in three games.

Spring Forward

While basketball is wrapping up, spring sports are getting in shape for the 2018 season.

Munroe baseball will be led by third-year coach Jeremy Barlow. Gadsden County will be coached by long-time coach Randall Estelle.

Donny Young will lead the Jaguar softball team and Ricardo Shaw and Cleo Wiggins will head up track-and-field. Flag football will be coached by Shannon Faison.

Todd Baroody will be Munroe’s flag football coach and Melissa May will run the tennis program at Munroe.
